Loreto 101

Loreto is a peaceful seaside town located on the eastern coast of the Baja California Peninsula, where the rugged Sierra de la Giganta mountains meet the turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez. Rich in history, Loreto was the first Spanish settlement in Baja and home to Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto, built in 1697. The town retains a laid-back, small-town charm, with friendly locals, cobblestone streets, and a picturesque malecón perfect for sunset strolls. Loreto appeals to those seeking tranquility, authentic Mexican culture, and access to spectacular natural beauty. Get me to Loreto

Getting to Loreto is refreshingly easy and sets the tone for a relaxing vacation. Most travelers arrive via nonstop flights from Los Angeles (LAX), which typically land by 1:00 p.m., allowing you to settle in and start enjoying your stay right away. The Loreto International Airport (LTO) is small and efficient, and just a 10-minute drive from Loreto Bay, so you’ll be unpacked and poolside in no time.

With only 2–3 commercial flights arriving daily, Loreto enjoys peace and quiet—no noise pollution, just the sound of the ocean and birds. Upon arrival, you can either grab a taxi at the airport or rent a car, though a vehicle isn’t necessary for most guests. Loreto Bay is a walkable community, and everything you need is close by.

Day to day necessities

If you plan to explore downtown Loreto or enjoy dinner and nightlife, a taxi is the safest and easiest option, especially since driving at night is not recommended in Baja, and local laws are strict about drinking and driving. Taxis are comfortable vans, accommodating groups easily, and cost about $30 roundtrip. Upon booking, we’ll recommend reputable, friendly drivers who are happy to take you to the grocery store or multiple stops. We also provide grocery boxes and insulated bags to make transporting your items easy and efficient.

Grocery shopping in Loreto offers a variety of options to suit every need—from authentic local staples to familiar comforts. Ley’s is the main grocery store for locals, offering a more authentic shopping experience with better pricing than El Pescador. Just on the edge of town, Mercado Juárez is a compact but well-stocked market with a surprisingly wide selection of produce, meats, and essentials.

For specialty goods, Pedro’s Delicatessen has a second location in town that caters especially well to visitors and expats. There, you’ll find a variety of “gringo” specialty items, as well as bulk goods from Kirkland Signature/Costco, perfect for stocking up during your stay.

When it comes to wine, beer, and spirits, Cactus Liquor on the edge of El Centro is a local favorite. It often carries a wider and better selection than the liquor shop in Loreto Bay, including Mexican and international labels.

With these options—ranging from local bodegas to expat-friendly delis—you can easily gather everything you need without ever having to leave town. Whether you’re planning a beach picnic, a poolside BBQ, or a stocked kitchen for a longer stay, Loreto has you covered.
